Polymeric Sand - 1
Polymeric Sand is a unique joining sand made of polymer binders and calibrated sand. Once polymeric sand sets, it becomes very firm and locks between the concrete interlocking paver joints. This firm bond maintains pavers securely in place, about it being equally effective on both horizontal and sloped surfaces. Available in grey and beige.

The advantage of Polymeric sand is that it helps prevent weed sprouting and damages caused by insects and erosion. The sand sets at above freezing temperature and takes approximately 3 hours.  There is no risk to staining concrete interlock stones, however it is advised not to use Polymeric sand on clay pavers.

SP Polymeric Sand

  • For sloping areas around pools and all types of driveways and walkways
  • Can be used for paving joints up to a maximum of 2 cm (1”)

XP Polymeric Sand

  • Ideal for around pools and spas, and for steeping sloping areas, wide concrete paver joints and areas experiencing excess water
  • Can be used for paving joints up to a maximum of 3.8 cm (1.5”)

Polymeric Sand - 2

Polymeric Stone Dust

  • Mixture of polymer binders and calibrated stone
  • Ideal for a variety of natural stone applications such as pool decks, patios and pathways
  • Also used for all types of natural stone joints between 1.25 cm (1/2”) to 10 cm (4”)
  • Works above 15º C
  • Not recommended for concrete pavers or slabs

Installation

Before applying any polymeric sand or stone dust, compact your pavers and install your paver edging. The surface must be dry and the temperature has to be above 0º C throughout the entire application and drying process. Do not start applying is rain is expected within 24 hours.

Step 1:  Clean the surface of the pavers with a broom and/or leaf blower to rid all the dust and debris.

Step 2: Spread the sand over the pavers.

Step 3: Sweep the sand evenly into all the joints of your interlock. Do not leave any sand sitting on the surface of the paving stones. Joint sand should fill the joint up until 1/8th of an inch below the paver height.

Polymeric Sand - 4

Step 4: Use a plate tamper to compact the surface of the paver to ensure the sand has completely penetrated the joints. Compacting is crucial for the installation of polymeric sand. Well compacted joints reduce water absorption by 60%, reduce the risk of washing away the polymers and significantly reduces the drying time.

Step 5: Apply and sweep in more sand where needed so all the joints are filled

Step 6: Compact the surface again to settle the sand. Repeat the sweeping and compacting procedure as needed until all the sand is settled into the joints and until it reaches the proper height.

Step 7:  Clean off the entire surface of the pavers with a broom and/or leaf blower. Take caution to ensure the sand is not blown out of the joints.

Step 8:  Activate the polymers by spraying the stone and joints with water. Set your hose spray nozzle to ‘shower’. Always start at the lower end of the installation and work up. Wet the surface from a height of 4 ft high for 30 seconds. Wait 15 seconds, then apply more water for another 30 seconds. On very hot days, you may need to repeat this step for a third time. You may notice the sand emitting a white foam, this is normal.  It is recommended you work in 200 square foot increments so you can properly manage the water. Be careful not to wash the sand out of the joints. The entire wetting process should be completed without interruptions from start to finish.

Polymeric Sand - 5

Step 9: Once activated, use the leaf blower to remove any excess moisture from the surface of the pavers and joints. It is extremely important that no residue is left on the surface of your pavers. Any sand left will harden on the surface, and will be very difficult to remove.

Wait 24 hours after application before any vehicular traffic.

A 50 lb. bag will cover approximately 60-75 square feet if the joints are narrow or 25-40 square feet if the paver joints are wider.

Joint Replacement

If you are replacing regular jointing sand, or fixing a previous polymeric sand job be sure to remove all the current sand. Pressure wash the sand out to the best of your abilities. At a minimum, an inch and a half to 2 inches down into the joint should be cleared. It is preferred to clear the entire joint space down to the bottom of the paver. Once the joints are cleared, follow the steps listed above.

Polymeric Sand - 1

Polymeric Sand is a unique joining sand made of polymer binders and calibrated sand. Once polymeric sand sets, about it it becomes very firm and locks between the concrete interlocking paver joints. This firm bond maintains pavers securely in place, being equally effective on both horizontal and sloped surfaces.

Polymeric Sand - 3

Base - 1

The success to your do-it-yourself interlock patio or retaining wall depends on the quality of the base. If you don’t create a perfectly solid structure for your stones, then freeze and thaw cycles will create movement resulting in sinking or shifting stones.

Base - 2

For a patio: 4-6” compacted A-Gravel and 1” stone dust or bedding sand

(Alternatively, side effects Gator Base can be used in replacement of A-Gravel)

For a wall: 4-6” compacted A-Gravel and 1” stone dust or bedding sand

For a driveway:  10-12” compacted A-Gravel and 1” stone dust or bedding sand

Installation

Step 1: Excavate the area for the pavers or wall

  • Depth of excavation will be determined by adding the following elements’ depths: geo-fabric, compacted A-Gravel’s final height, bedding sand, and your paver’s height or the height of the wall unit below grade
  • For patios and driveways, excavate an extra 6 inches wider than the final paved area – this allows room for edging restraints

Step 2: Level and compact the base

  • Once excavation is complete, level the area of native soil using a screeder ensuring the area is as smooth as possible
  • Create a slope of at least 1 degree away from any structure, such as a house

Optional Step 3: Add the geo-fabric

  • You may choose to lay down a layer of the geo-fabric and cover the entire excavated area

Step 4: Compacting the stone

  • In increments of 4-6 inches, add the gravel and compact with a hand compactor or a plate tamper

Step 5:  Add bedding sand

  • Spread an even 1” layer of sand over the compacted stone, and level

Base - 3

I leave a response whenever I especially enjoy a post on a website or I have something to add to the conversation. It’s caused by the passion displayed in the article I looked at.
