There isn’t one “best” grass seed variety. The key to a lush green lawn is ensuring you buy the right seed mixture to suit your location climate, lifestyle needs, and soil conditions. Do a little research before you pick your bag. To help you decide which type of seed, ask yourself the following:
- Are you planting a new lawn or reseeding bare spots?
- Does your lawn experience low, medium or high traffic?
- Does your yard receive full, partial or no sun at all?
If you are looking to grow your lawn from scratch, be sure to pick up a bag of Premium Lawn Seed. This mixture of Kentucky Blue, Creeping Red Fescue and Perennial Rye will fill your lawn with fine bladed grass medium to dark green in colour. This mixture is easily established from seed and spreads in a “creeping” growth habit. Due to the slower growth of the Kentucky blue grass, the germination period of this mixture is longer, typically taking 1 to 2 months to fully establish.
The Quick Catch seed mixture on the other hand has the shortest germination period. A mixture of 3 different types of Rye grass makes this grass seed variety perfect for getting something green in place quick. This mixture is extremely tough and provides the most wear tolerant lawns. You’ll find this mix perfect for high traffic regions and areas prone to erosion.
An Overseed mixture of Perennial Rye, Kentucky Blue, and Creeping Red Fescue will help to thicken your lawn that has become thin or damaged by winter, insects, disease, weeds, drought or excessive traffic. The high percentage of Rye grass in this mixture makes it highly wear, drought and cold tolerant, while maintaining the look of regular thin blade grass with the Kentucky Blue and Red Fescue seed.
If you don’t plan on watering your lawn much this summer, make sure you take home a bag of the Hardy Lawn mixture. The high Fescue content in this mixture makes it excellent for heat and drought in warm summer temperatures, but it also stays green during cool but not severe winter conditions. The Hardy Lawn is tolerable of moderate traffic.
A Sun & Shade grass seed includes a bit of everything – Kentucky Blue, Creeping Red Fescue, Perennial Rye and Chewing Fescue. This is a premium mixture that is ideally suited to sunny areas but will tolerate partial shade due to the higher Fescue content. The high percentage of bluegrass makes this turf an attractive dark green with a fine leaf texture.
Each of these grass seed mixtures is equipped with Lateral Spread Technology. Unique to the General Seed brand, this class of seed exhibits growth patterns that are more horizontal than other seeds. Through natural mechanisms like tilling, this seed aggressively establishes, spreads, and fills in holes creating a higher density turf, especially when under stress.
Buyer beware: seed coatings and blends with fertilizer included are not worth the money and double the cost of the seed you actually require. Coated seed will rot faster than uncoated seeds because they absorb water.
